Blog posts I should write about :)

  • How to get a job
  • Think like a real estate or professional services consultant
  • Each meeting is a get to know you and your vision better
  • It's a proposal to pitch
    • Big companies = B2B sales -- longer sales cycle
    • Small companies = B2C sales -- more random, unstructured process
    • Rejected? Get feedback = Win/Loss Analysis
  • Give me a fair chance
  • Let me give you concrete examples
  • I'm not Seth Godin or a seasoned speaker  -- I don't always remember my war stories from 5 years ago
  • Judge me on my skills and abilities, minimize the arbitrary decision making
    • Pedigree or who has more technical background, which may or may not translate
    • Yes people are looking for two things: competency and cultural "do-I-like-you" fit (Lewis Lin)
    • With case studies, I can focus on the storytelling and not remembering the facts
    • You don't go to an investor meeting without a deck, you go to a client pitch with your collaterals
    • Think sales and bd -- they have their sales collaterals (case study, printouts and websites)
    • Resume is just a simple business card, not even a one-pager
    • Guide the client to less imagining to more nodding
  • Like going to the AirPort, have your passport and boarding pass ready
  • Reference: how to get a job by david Rogier and consultative selling by rich Mironov, Lewis Lin (competency and likability)
  • Most people want to hire others like them
  • Or theyre looking to check boxes off a list
  • Or it's risk-based
  • By having your shit presented on a platter, you eliminating a lot of the guesswork
  • After each project, professional, academic or pro bono, make a case study!!

Take control of the conversation

  • Preemptively share blog posts and portfolio
    • Demonstrate how you think
    • It's too damn hard to remember everything about yourself and try to give a precise answer to a haphazard interview
      • Get the questions firsthand
      • Or just share your stuff first
  • Ask questions
    • You are conducting your own due diligence just as much as they are
    • Be aggressive more than passive on this
  • What's metrics are you optimizing for and what's the vision for the next 12-18 months?
    • List of questions (Evernote list)
    • Make sure you're reaching the next stage of their process
    • Close close!

Flow

  • Goal of each funnel stage is to get to the next phase
  • <visualize this>
  • Goal: Quickly determine if I should continue investing time and resources (research, emotional dreams, etc.)
    • Don't waste your time, don't waste mine
